WyeCycle is a community business, working to
create employment and protect the environment through the reduction, reuse and
recycling of waste in the villages of Wye with Hinxhill and Brook. WyeCycle
realised that modern waste management practices were unsustainable and looked at
waste as a resource rather than a problem.
We looked at how the public could reduce the
amount of waste it produced by practical means by providing usable consumer
guidelines combined with comprehensive services. Working with the concept of
Zero Waste, WyeCycle has reduced the average household waste going to landfill,
to less than 260kg/yr. This has only been achieved by working closely within our
community and with other organisations and networks to find workable local
solutions to reduce and reuse discarded materials in combination with recycling
and composting.
Aiming at the reduction of waste, WyeCycle has set up a local cleaning products refill scheme with a local shop, delivers a local veg box in partnership with a local organic farm and organises the fortnightly Wye Farmers Market
.
The huge quantity of reusable items discarded
by households has led to us setting up a furniture and electrical shop and a
monthly SWAP day for books, toys, bric’a’ brac and kitchenware. By being aware
of present and future waste legislation, WyeCycle has started collections of
batteries (both domestic and vehicular), light bulbs and electrical
equipment.
We are always looking to reduce our
environmental footprint and now run all our vehicles on Biodiesel made from
waste cooking oil and have completely equipped our offices with reused PCs and
furniture. WyeCycle provides support to community groups starting similar
projects, and campaigns for sustainable waste management at a local and national
level.
